Nisyros is a small Greek island in the Dodecanese complex, between Kos and Tilos. It is a quiet place, that fascinates and charms visitors with it's strong, colourful character, the dark brown of it's volcanic earth, the white of it's houses and the deep blue of the surrounding sea. Nothing disturbs the silence of the island, which gives it a mysterious charm that remains with visitors who find the island an enchanting destination. One of the natural attractions on the island is the volcano, on it's central side, near the village of Nikia, on the plateau of Lakki. It is an active volcano with a large crater into which one can descend. Entering the crater, one could easily imagine that you were walking on the moon, were it not for the hot sun that shines in all it's glory.
The crater, which is relatively deep, is layered with a hot surface (not hot enough to scold, you can easily walk on it but you must wear shoes!) which causes vapours to rise from the ground.
Nisyros also has therapeutic springs with alleged curative properties at Loutra, near the capital, Mandraki. The island is steeped in mythology which gives it an added aura of mystery.
According to mythological tales, the god Neptune, helping Zeus to combat the Titans, was pursuing the terrible giant Polyvotis. Arriving in front of the island of Kos, he detached with his trident, a part of the island which he launched at Polyvotis burying the giant underneath it in the sea. The island of Nisyros is created by this fragmentary part of the island of Kos. The volcano is said to be created in the place where the mouth of Polyvotis would be and the periodic earth vibrations are said to be the continuous, laboured breathing of the buried Titan's chest!
